September 11, 1802: France annexes Piedmont in northwestern Italy.
September 11, 1973: The government of Chile is overthrown in a military coup, planned by the commanders of the three armed forces and the chief of police. Army General Augusto Pinochet leads this coup, and President Salvador Allende takes his own life during the siege of La Moneda Palace, the historic seat of the country's presidency.
September 11, 2001: 19 terrorists hijack 4 American airliners. The first two are flown into each of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York, the third into the Pentagon, headquarters of the Department of Defense in Washington DC, and the fourth crashes in the countryside near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. These attacks, attributed to the Al-Qaeda network, resulted in 2,977 victims.
