October 7 to November 7, 2004 Austrian festival of modern art the steirischer herbst. Under the motto &.there is always a crisis& the herbst analyzes central issues of our times by means of art. Among these issues are world premieres of Olga Neuwirth, Wolfgang Bauer and Kathrin Röggla. Two of these productions will be staged at the Helmut-List-Hall and with its unique acoustics, it is also considered an architectural trademark of the cultural city Graz.
Daily, from 7:00 till 22:00, hourly at 10 minutes to. Max Neuhaus: Time Piece Graz It was for the actual opening of Kunsthaus Graz that the American sound artist Max Neuhaus conceived a sound installation. The work titled &Time Piece* will be retained by the Kunsthaus for the future and remain its permanent accompaniment. &Time Piece* in the given form is a sound composition that is unique in the world: a barely audible sound, slowly becoming louder, spreads itself within and around the Kunsthaus, only to break off suddenly at its maximum level and thus give rise to a moment of silence.

October 8, 2004 to January 16, 2005 BIX façade, or: high interest in low resolution

In autumn 2004, the BIX façade is to be both the stage and medium for a video work by the Viennese graphics programmer Lia, within the theme of &Moving Parts*. The visual starting material is the video "int.5_27/G.S.I.L.XXXI" (visuals: lia, sound: @c), adapted specifically for the special properties of the façade. External sources of sound, captured by a directional microphone installed beneath the "Needle", will be visualised by means of computer programs and relayed directly to the façade.

wpe1C.jpg (26428 bytes)The BIX façade on the east side of Kunsthaus Graz had already become an important place for experimentation among artists in its first year of existence. The façade is based on a concept from the Berlin group realities:united, and functions as an oversize, low resolution display: covering 900 m2 are 930 ring-shaped fluorescent tubes built into the building*s external skin and individually controllable via a dedicated simulation program. This allows complex text messages and simple sequences of images to be broadcast directly from the Kunsthaus to the surrounding urban space.

Michel Majerus & John Baldessari & art from Japan

"The toilet is a beach toilet in Santa Monica and has already been screen printed in 60 x 60 cm format. Funny; in printed form it looks strangely like a Baldessari, no longer like a Warhol. Is that down to the air here? ..."1 Michel Majerus, born in 1967 and killed in an air crash in 2002, produced an exceptional and exemplary set of works of contemporary art in his brief ten year career.

Styrian pumpkins are ripened and harvested in the fall. To make pumpkin seed oil, the seeds are manually removed from the pumpkins. Approximately 2.5kg of pumpkin seeds are required to make one liter of pumpkin seed oil. Once the seeds have been removed from the pumpkins, they are washed and dried. The dried seeds are then roasted for a few minutes at a high temperature (approximately 140ºF). Once roasted, the seeds are pressed using high pressure. The result of this pressing is the production of a dark green/black oil. This oil is then bottled and packaged for use.

Pumpkin seed oil has an unusual flavor that is somewhat nutty. Because of this unusual flavor, if you are not used to using pumpkin seed oil it is recommended that you experiment with it first. For example, try finding recipes that contain the oil and test the results of its usage. Pumpkin seed oil is typically used as a salad dressing combined with apple cider vinegar and salt. Additionally, it can be used in cooking and baking as an ingredient in sauces, sausages, and cakes.

Pumpkin seed oil, also called Kuerbiskernoel, is derived from the Styrian pumpkin whose botanical name is known as Cucurbita Pepo Convarietas Citrullinina - Varietas Styriaca. Although these pumpkins originated in the southeast region of Austria, which is called Styria, they are now grown in other parts of the world including in Ontario, Canada. Styrian pumpkins are a special variety of pumpkin. These pumpkins have a yellow/green skin and yellow/orange flesh inside. Additionally, these pumpkins contain seeds that are dark green and that do not have an outer shell. Because Styrian pumpkin seeds do not have a shell, the seeds can be processed easily into pumpkin seed oil.

The upper floor (Space01) of the kunsthaus turns out to be essentially predestined for sculptural, spatial works. Sol LeWitt*s monumental work  illustrated the spatial qualities and potential of the upper display area in a particularly impressive way.

&Perception in Art*

The opening exhibition at the Kunsthaus   &Perception in Art* , and the general theme of perception, marked the first realisation of programme content. Yet &Imagination* had to deliver much more, namely pioneering work with regard to the many possibilities for deploying the new spaces, a task that was altogether successfully achieved in the original and subsequent exhibitions.
